The Fairbanks North Star Borough is located in the heart of Interior Alaska, and with 84,979 residents, is the second-largest population center in the state. This borough was established on January 1, 1964. Its total area encompasses 7,361 square miles of land.  Summer days linger here; when the solstice arrives, there is more than 22 hours of daylight.

Koyukon Athabascans have lived in this area for thousands of years. Fairbanks developed when the Chena steamboat landing brought many non-Natives to Fairbanks during the Pedro Dome gold rush. The population of the area continued to increase after construction of the Alcan Highway and the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline. There are also two large military installations within the Borough - Fort Wainwright Army Post and Eielson Air Force Base. These installations account for over one-fifth of the Borough's population.
